Position Overview
FEMA Mining and Drilling Limited is seeking a skilled and experienced Heavy Equipment and LVs AC Technician to join our maintenance team in Katoro, Geita. The successful candidate will be responsible for the installation, inspection, diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance of air conditioning (AC) and HVAC systems on heavy mining machinery and light vehicles (LVs). This critical role ensures operator comfort, equipment reliability, and reduced downtime in the demanding conditions of open-pit mining and drilling operations, where extreme heat, dust, and vibration are common challenges.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain air conditioning, heating, ventilation, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems on heavy equipment (e.g., haul trucks, excavators, loaders, drill rigs) and light vehicles (e.g., pickups, service trucks, utility vehicles).
- Perform preventive maintenance checks, including refrigerant level inspections, system pressure testing, filter cleaning/replacement, belt and hose inspections, and electrical component checks.
- Evacuate, recover, recharge, and regas AC systems using approved refrigerants and recovery equipment in compliance with environmental regulations.
- Repair or replace faulty components such as compressors, condensers, evaporators, expansion valves, clutches, fans, blowers, thermostats, switches, wiring, and seals.
- Conduct leak detection tests using electronic detectors, UV dye, or soap solution methods, and perform necessary sealing or component replacement.
- Inspect and service related systems, including cabin ventilation, defrosters, and air filtration to maintain air quality and operator safety in dusty mining environments.
- Maintain accurate service records, work orders, parts usage logs, and reports on AC system performance, repairs, and maintenance history using company systems.
- Ensure all work complies with company safety policies, Tanzanian occupational health and safety regulations, and manufacturer specifications.
- Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, risk assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives related to maintenance practices.
- Assist other workshop teams with minor related tasks (e.g., electrical diagnostics or cooling system support) when required.
- Work shifts, including rostered days/nights, weekends, and overtime as needed in a 24/7 mining operation.
- Report any unsafe conditions, equipment defects, or near-misses immediately to the Workshop Supervisor.
Qualifications and Experience
- Certificate or Diploma in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology, Automotive Mechanics, or a related technical field from a recognized institution.
- At least 3–5 years of hands-on experience as an AC Technician, preferably working on heavy equipment, off-road vehicles, or mining machinery AC/HVAC systems.
- Proven experience with automotive/heavy-duty AC systems (e.g., R134a, R1234yf refrigerants, variable displacement compressors, and cabin climate controls).
- Valid Tanzanian driving license (Class B or higher) is required.
- Certification in refrigerant handling/recovery (e.g., EPA-equivalent or local equivalent) is highly desirable.
Key Skills and Competencies
- Strong diagnostic skills using AC manifold gauges, multimeters, leak detectors, and diagnostic tools.
- Knowledge of electrical systems, wiring diagrams, and troubleshooting in heavy equipment and vehicle environments.
- Familiarity with heavy mining equipment brands (e.g., Caterpillar, Komatsu, Hitachi) and light vehicle AC systems.
- Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Physical fitness to handle heavy components, work in confined spaces, hot/dusty conditions, and at heights when required.
- Good communication skills in English and/or Kiswahili, with the ability to work effectively in a team.
- Strong safety awareness and adherence to lockout/tagout, PPE, and hazardous material handling procedures.
- Reliability, punctuality, and willingness to learn company-specific procedures and equipment.
