Position Overview
FEMA Mining and Drilling Limited is offering exciting internship opportunities for three (3) motivated Mining Engineer Interns to join our dynamic mining operations team in Katoro, Geita. This internship provides hands-on practical exposure to real-world mining and drilling activities, including support for mine planning, drilling operations, blasting support, equipment oversight, and safety compliance in an active mining environment. Interns will work closely with experienced engineers to develop technical skills, contribute to daily operations, and gain valuable industry experience toward a career in mining engineering. The role emphasizes learning, safety, and supporting efficient, responsible resource extraction.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in mine planning, scheduling, and design activities under the guidance of the Project Engineer, including updating mine layouts, production tracking, and short-term plans.
- Support drilling and blasting operations by collecting data, monitoring performance, assisting with pattern design, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
- Participate in site inspections, surveying, mapping, and data collection related to ore extraction, ground conditions, equipment usage, and environmental factors.
- Help analyze production data, prepare basic reports, track daily/weekly progress, and contribute to quality control and optimization initiatives.
- Assist in contractor oversight, equipment monitoring, and coordination of mining activities to minimize downtime and enhance operational efficiency.
- Support health, safety, and environmental (HSE) compliance by participating in safety meetings, toolbox talks, risk assessments, and adherence to company and regulatory standards.
- Perform basic technical tasks such as ventilation checks (if applicable), geotechnical observations, water management support, or reclamation planning assistance.
- Maintain accurate records, logs, and documentation for engineering activities, production metrics, and project progress.
- Collaborate with geologists, operations teams, and other departments to support overall mine goals.
- Undertake any other entry-level engineering or operational tasks as assigned by the Project Engineer or site management.
Qualifications and Experience
- Recently completed a Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a closely related field from a recognized university.
- Strong academic record with relevant coursework in mine planning, drilling and blasting, rock mechanics, mine safety, or open-pit operations preferred.
- No prior professional experience required; practical exposure through university projects, field attachments, or simulations is an advantage.
Key Skills and Competencies
- Basic understanding of mining principles, open-pit operations, drilling techniques, and safety protocols.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for data analysis and reporting; familiarity with mining software (e.g., AutoCAD, Surpac, or similar) is a plus.
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to learn quickly in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication skills in English and/or Kiswahili, with the ability to work effectively in a team.
- High level of physical fitness and willingness to work in outdoor, dusty, and remote site conditions (including shifts if required).
- Commitment to safety, environmental responsibility, and ethical practices in mining.
- Proactive attitude, reliability, and eagerness to gain practical experience.
