Position Overview

FEMA Mining and Drilling Limited is seeking two (2) skilled and experienced Heavy Equipment Mechanics to join our maintenance team in Katoro, Geita. The successful candidates will be responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, repair, preventive maintenance, and overhaul of heavy mobile mining equipment and support machinery. This role is essential to ensuring high equipment availability, safe operations, and optimal performance in a challenging open-pit mining and drilling environment, where reliability directly impacts production targets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine preventive maintenance (PM) services, inspections, and lubrication on heavy equipment such as excavators, wheel loaders, haul trucks, drill rigs, bulldozers, graders, and ancillary vehicles.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical faults using diagnostic tools, schematics, and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Repair or replace defective components, including engines, transmissions, differentials, hydraulic systems, brakes, steering, undercarriage, cooling systems, and electrical circuits.
  • Conduct major overhauls, component rebuilds, and breakdowns repairs to restore equipment to operational condition as quickly and safely as possible.
  • Inspect equipment daily/weekly for wear, damage, leaks, or potential failures, and report findings to the Workshop Supervisor.
  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, repairs, parts used, downtime, and service history using company maintenance systems or logbooks.
  • Ensure compliance with all health, safety, and environmental (HSE) policies, including lockout/tagout (LOTO), use of personal protective equipment (PPE), hazardous material handling, and Tanzanian mining regulations.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, risk assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance maintenance practices.
  • Assist in parts identification, ordering recommendations, and inventory management for critical components.
  • Work collaboratively with operators, other mechanics, and supervisors to coordinate repairs and minimize production interruptions.
  • Operate in shifts, including rostered days/nights, weekends, and overtime as required in a 24/7 mining operation.
  • Report any unsafe conditions, near-misses, or equipment defects immediately to the Workshop Supervisor.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Certificate or Diploma in Automotive/Heavy Equipment Mechanics, Diesel Mechanics, or a related technical field from a recognized vocational institution.
  • At least 4–7 years of hands-on experience as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic or Heavy Duty Mechanic, preferably in mining, quarrying, or heavy construction with large mobile equipment (e.g., Caterpillar, Komatsu, Hitachi, or similar brands).
  • Proven experience in open-pit mining equipment maintenance, including hydraulic systems, diesel engines, and undercarriage repairs.
  • Valid Tanzanian driving license (Class B or higher, preferably with heavy vehicle endorsement) is required.

Key Skills and Competencies

  • Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills for mechanical, hydraulic, and basic electrical systems in heavy machinery.
  • Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, welding basics, and workshop machinery.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance schedules, OEM specifications, and common failure modes in mining environments.
  • Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and commitment to quality and safety.
  • Physical fitness to handle heavy lifting, work in dusty/hot/outdoor conditions, confined spaces, and at heights when required.
  • Good communication skills in English and/or Kiswahili, with the ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and a proactive safety-first mindset.
