Job Summary FEMA Mining and Drilling Limited is seeking three (3) experienced and safety-conscious Tiremen to join our mining operations team in Katoro, Geita. The successful candidates will be responsible for the inspection, maintenance, repair, mounting/dismounting, and replacement of large off-the-road (OTR) tires on heavy mining equipment, including haul trucks, loaders, excavators, drill rigs, and support vehicles. This role is critical to ensuring equipment availability, minimizing downtime, and maintaining safe operations in a demanding mining environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine and reactive inspections of tires on all mobile heavy equipment to identify wear, damage, cuts, punctures, sidewall issues, or other defects.
- Dismount, mount, repair, and replace OTR tires and wheels using specialized tire handling equipment, tools, and machinery (e.g., tire handlers, bead breakers, inflation cages).
- Conduct tire pressure checks, adjustments, rotations, and balancing to optimize tire life and equipment performance.
- Repair tire injuries (e.g., section repairs, plugging) where feasible, or recommend full replacement in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and company standards.
- Maintain accurate records of tire inspections, repairs, changes, pressures, tread depths, and usage history using company systems or logbooks.
- Assist in tire inventory management, including tracking stock levels, preparing spares, and ensuring matching tires are available for breakdowns.
- Operate safely in compliance with all health, safety, and environmental (HSE) policies, including lockout/tagout procedures, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and adherence to tire and rim safety protocols.
- Report any unsafe conditions, near-misses, or equipment defects immediately to the Workshop Supervisor.
- Perform minor related maintenance tasks as directed (e.g., wheel cleaning, rim inspections).
- Work shifts, including rostered days/nights, weekends, and overtime as required in a 24/7 mining operation.
- Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum of Form Four (O-Level) certificate or equivalent; Technical/Vocational Certificate or Diploma in Automotive Mechanics, Heavy Equipment Maintenance, or a related field is an advantage.
- At least 2–5 years of hands-on experience as a Tireman/Tyre Fitter/Tire Technician, preferably in mining, quarrying, or heavy construction with large OTR tires (e.g., haul truck, loader, or earthmover tires).
- Proven experience working with giant/off-the-road tires (sizes 18.00R33 and above preferred).
- Basic knowledge of tire construction, wear patterns, inflation procedures, and common failure modes in mining environments.
Key Skills and Competencies
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to use heavy-duty tire service tools and equipment safely.
- Excellent attention to detail for defect identification and accurate record-keeping.
- Good physical fitness and ability to handle heavy lifting, working at heights, and in dusty/hot outdoor conditions.
- Commitment to safety-first culture with knowledge of tire/rim hazards (e.g., explosive inflation risks).
- Ability to work effectively in a team and communicate clearly in English and/or Kiswahili.
- Reliability, punctuality, and willingness to learn company-specific procedures.
